1:1 computing Model
Title: 1:1 Computing Model
Area of Mastery: Professional Development
Description:
This 1:1 Computing Model assignment was completed as part of my coursework for ETT 592.
The 1:1 computing model was our opportunity to create a plan to analyze, design, develop and implement a 1:1 environment for a secondary school. For the assignment, my group created a fictitious secondary school, “ABC High School. In our scenario, ABC High School will be be providing all students a Google Chromebook to use during school hours. Our 1:1 Chromebook Program is an example of an excellent way for a school to fully integrate 21st century learning into the curriculum. In the plan, we included all the elements necessary for a successful roll out of a 1:1 computing plan. This includes:
- Administrator training
- Teacher training, including:
Rationale:
This plan demonstrates my ability to analyze the technology needs of a school and then design, develop, and implement a 1:1 computing environment, including plans for rules, stakeholder engagement, cost, deployment/management, and professional development.
My learning from this project has had an enormous and immediate impact on my own professional practice and, in turn, my students. For the 2013-14 school year, my school has decided to implement a 1:1 computing plan of its own. Much like ABC High School, they have decided to provide each student with a Samsung Chromebook. Because of my experience, I was made part of the Technology Leadership Team. I was able to use the skills and knowledge I gained from this project to help guide my school towards the successful roll out of a 1:1 computing environment for my students. Though the deployment has run into some logistical issues not of our own doing, I am confident that by providing every student a computing device we can truly promote the 21st century learning skills that are necessary to be successful in college and beyond. I have been informed that I will be a key part of the team that will lead the Professional Development for the staff to ensure that they understand the benefits of the Chrome OS and how to best utilize these tools to enhance student learning outcomes for our school. Whomever my future learners will be, whether it is classroom students or my instructors if I am a tech integration specialist, will be positively affected by the work I've done for this project and what I've learned about teaching others professional development. I have a clearer idea of how to structure professional development and the steps that are necessary to ensure that learning success. This success will trickle down from the classroom teachers, benefiting students who will have technologically competent teachers armed with the best tools to improve student learning outcomes.
