instructional unit plan
Title: Instructional Unit Plan
Area of Mastery: Instructional Design
Description:
This Instructional Unit Plan was completed as part of my coursework for ETT 535.
As part of my coursework, I was asked to design an Instructional Unit Plan to be delivered in a distance learning environment, taking into consideration all of the elements involved in designing instruction for a distance learning setting.
The planning for the unit involved several steps. For the first step, I created a Unit Overview in which I outlined the learning objectives for the whole unit and the individual lessons. The unit was also aligned with Common Core standards. Additionally, the prerequisite skills necessary to be successful in the course were outlined.
For the second step, I conducted interviews with students who have distance learning experience. I used the information gained to create a rationale for delivering the course at a distance and for what accommodations and technology would be necessary for success. The final step was to lay out the objective, strategy, technology requirements, outcomes, and assessments for each of the unit’s five lessons.
Rationale:
This Instructional Unit Plan is an example of my ability to analyze a problem/situation, recommend reasonable strategies, and apply a coherent design model appropriate for a specific learning setting. As an educator with five years of experience, I feel that I am very adept at instructional design. I believe that, like this particular unit plan, any of my course’s unit plans would demonstrate this. What makes this particular Instructional Unit Plan special is that it demonstrates my ability to approach this from a distance learning perspective. There are several different things that need to be taken into consideration for distance learning, and I feel this plan shows my ability to successfully address them all. I know that learning opportunities I provide for students in the future, whether they be traditional in-class opportunities, distance learning, or a flipped classroom, will be successful because of what this course and this project taught me. This artifact demonstrates that I have the skills necessary to create well thought out, meaningful learning opportunities. In particular, I am able to provide my students with the 21st century learning opportunities that are necessary to their future success in college and beyond.
